Message from the President

From ARPAS President Marit Arana, PhD, PAS  email this article

Warm and smokey greetings from California. I am honored to have been chosen to serve as your president for the next year. Dr. Darrell Johnson and the previous past-presidents have all left some big shoes to fill, but I feel that I am up to the task of leading this organization for the next year. It is a pleasure to serve an organization that is dynamic and enthusiastic about its future.   CLICK HERE TO READ MORE

If I had to pick one word to describe this past year it would be “transition.” We have gone through several transitions during this past year but that is indicative of a growing organization. I would like to point out several changes that have occurred during the last year.

What motivates retired people to want to take on part-time work? They need some place to go, they want to be needed, they need the money, they have a cause they care about or retirement is really just a figment of one’s imagination.

I can eliminate most of these very quickly and say if I didn’t believe in the mission of ARPAS,   CLICK HERE TO READ MORE

Report from Former Treasurer Keith Lusby, PhD, PAS, Dipl ACAN  email this article

The ARPAS fiscal year coincides with the calendar year. ARPAS ended December 2007 with total revenue and support of approximately $249,000, compared to a budgeted amount of about $219,000. Both membership and revenue from the PAS journal exceeded expectations. The size of the journal has increased significantly, which caused revenues to increase due to additional pages charges. ARPAS ended the fiscal year 2007 with a net change in assets of $16,307 compared to the budgeted amount of $7,745.

As of May 31, 2008, member dues and corporate sponsorships have exceeded budget expectations by about $8,000. ARPAS had $128,000 in cash and $209,000 in investments. Revenues from corporate sponsorship have exceeded expectations. ARPAS should end the year with a strong financial position. The Governing Council will make any needed budget adjustments at its meeting in January 2009.

Reports from ARPAS Chapters  email this article

"It take a Village," a title one notable politician used for her book. That is how I see an ARPAS chapter relative to the whole of ARPAS. Without our chapters, the organization does not have local or state representation. Yes, we have individual members and we have regions, but members don't have the opportunity to participate in organized meetings with their regional director or to discuss needs and issues. With a large enough Chapter, you can even have your own representative on the Governing Council as does the California Chapter. Our chapters give members an opportunity to meet, share and shape the direction of ARPAS.

"It takes a Chapter" and we are fortunate to have several, but we need more of them to give all of our ARPAS members a "Village."
