MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
From ARPAS President Marit Arana, PhD, PAS, Dipl ACAS
As spring is now here, the meeting season seems to be in full swing. I know that ARPAS has been represented at quite a few meetings in the last few months. I plan on attending the Discover Conference on Direct Fed Microbials in Indiana in April, and I will also be in Keystone, Colorado, for the Equine Science meetings at the end of May. If you know of anyone who would like to take the ARPAS exam at either of these locations, please have them contact me to arrange an exam time. My e-mail is marit.arana@algilbert.com. They can also visit the Web site and see other locations where exams are being offered.
The new ARPAS Foundation is or will be finalized by the time you are reading this newsletter. Please visit the brief article on the foundation that is in this newsletter for more information. Please let your Executive Council know if you have any questions or comments about the ARPAS Foundation.
Remember to please help us get our new ARPAS logo out in the world. It is available to use on business cards, stationery, and in advertising materials. Please contact Susie at the ARPAS office, and she will arrange for you to be sent the logo file.
The Nominating Committee (our last three past presidents) has done an excellent job finding outstanding candidates for the open positions. So, don’t forget to vote in the upcoming ARPAS election—make your opinion count. Those individuals who are elected will take over their new positions at the end of the summer meeting in Montreal.

Distinguished Professional Animal Scientist—A New ARPAS Award
ARPAS is pleased to announce the establishment of a new award to honor emeritus members who have made significant service contributions to this organization and to the animal sciences. The name of the award is Distinguished Professional Animal Scientist. The first recipients will be announced at our 2008–2009 annual meeting in Montreal.
Any ARPAS member may nominate a worthy emeritus member for this award, and the final selection will be made by the Executive Committee with approval from the Governing Council.
The guidelines for this award are as follows:
The ARPAS Distinguished Professional Animal Scientist award will be bestowed annually on emeritus members of ARPAS who have
- Made significant contributions to the animal sciences during their active career.
- Served in leadership positions within ARPAS and who have continued their membership in ARPAS as an emeritus member.
These individuals will be recognized by an article in the Newsletter and the PAS journal and with a tribute at our annual meeting. A suitable award will be presented to them on this occasion. They will also be granted lifetime membership in ARPAS with emeritus privileges. The selection criteria are that nominees
- Must have been an active member of ARPAS for at least 10 years prior to retirement from active membership.
- Must have served in a leadership role in ARPAS during their active membership. Leadership positions are defined as officers, directors, representatives, and committee members at the national or chapter level.

Nominations may be made by any member of ARPAS. Final selection will be made by the ARPAS Executive Committee with confirmation from the ARPAS Governing Council. The number of awards each year will not exceed 0.3% of the total ARPAS membership.
The ARPAS Foundation
The American Registry of Professional Animal Scientists has recently established the ARPAS Foundation. The purpose for establishing this foundation is to provide a funding source for worthy educational efforts of ARPAS and its members that is not dependent on our annual budget. The Foundation is modeled somewhat after the American Dairy Science Association Foundation. The Foundation is still a function of ARPAS, and both are nonprofit entities for tax purposes.
This Foundation is organized separately from the ARPAS financial structure and is not funded as a part of the ARPAS annual budget or any current ARPAS reserve funds. Only the earnings from funds directed to the ARPAS Foundation will be used to further the educational efforts of the ARPAS Foundation. The initial governing body for the Foundation will be the ARPAS Executive Committee.
We have $20,000 that has already been directed to the ARPAS Foundation to establish a funding source for worthy educational activities for ARPAS members. Other ARPAS members are encouraged to consider making tax-deductible gifts to the Foundation. The ARPAS Executive Committee will soon be meeting to plan activities for fund-raising and to refine ideas for using the money earned by the assets of the Foundation.
The general principles and guidelines for operation of the ARPAS Foundation are as follows:
- The funds accumulated by the ARPAS Foundation are to be invested at the discretion of the ARPAS Executive Committee.
- Only the earnings from the invested funds may be used to support the educational efforts of the Foundation. The principal will not be used except under extreme circumstances as determined by the ARPAS Governing Council.
- The ARPAS Executive Committee will make the final decision regarding the educational efforts to be funded by the Foundation. ARPAS members are encouraged to suggest uses for the funds.
- The ARPAS Executive Committee will lead the ARPAS efforts to raise funds to build the assets of the Foundation.
- In any event that the Foundation should be terminated, any remaining funds will become the property of ARPAS.

2009 Joint Annual Meeting and Other Upcoming Conferences
2009 Tri-State Dairy Nutrition Conference
The time for the annual Tri-State Dairy Nutrition Conference (TSDNC) is quickly approaching. The conference will be held April 21 and 22, 2009, at the Grand Wayne Convention Center, downtown Fort Wayne, Indiana, with adjoining hotel accommodations. Please list the Tri-State Dairy Nutrition Conference in the calendar of events section of your publication. Details can be found at the conference Web site: http://tristatedairy.osu.edu
In a two-day noon-to-noon format, the TSDNC, 2009, will feature presentations on the latest nutritional research and developments affecting the tri-state dairy feed industry. This annual conference is sponsored by Michigan State, The Ohio State, and Purdue Universities, with the help of an industry planning committee. Last year, more than 400 participants attended the conference.
Before the conference, there will be a preconference Dairy Management Symposium offered by Chr. Hansen Animal Health and Nutrition. It will be held at the same location as the symposium program running from 7:30 am to noon on the morning of April 21. For more details and to register for the preconference, see the TSDNC Web site listed above.
When asked which theme of this year’s conference was most notable, Tamilee Nennich, Purdue University Animal Sciences Department, said:
“The Corn and Corn Products theme is one of particular interest this year. ‘The Economical Value of Corn Silage’ will be covered by Dr. Normand St. Pierre, OSU; ‘Effects of the Chemical and Physical Characteristics of Corn on Digestibility’ by Dr. Fred Owens, Pioneer Hi-Bred International; ‘Feeding Low Starch Diets’ by Dr. Heather Dann, Miner Institute; and ‘Storing Wet Grain Commodities’ by Dr. Larry Berger, Illinois State University. These speakers are sure to tackle many of the feed cost concerns of dairy producers in the tri-state region and surrounding states in a time of lowered milk prices in 2009.”
If you publish a paper or magazine of interest to feed professionals in Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, or the surrounding states and Canadian provinces, we would very much appreciate your assistance announcing this conference in the calendar of events in an upcoming issue.
