President’s Letter

Heidi Rossow, PhD, PAS

ARPAS President
UC Davis, Vet Med Teaching and Research Center

Hi and welcome to spring 2023! With hardships and difficulties in maintaining and recruiting new memberships in the past several years due to COVID, ARPAS has been focused on updating its organization, recruiting, renewing memberships, and showing the benefits of belonging to ARPAS. It truly has been a team effort and several of these efforts are described below.

Immediate Past President’s Letter

Paul Beck, PhD, PAS, Dpl. ACAS

As I close out my time as President of ARPAS, it seems we have been very busy, but still have a lot that needs to be done.

Membership in ARPAS is still down, but the fall in membership last year was only about 40% of the reduction from the year prior. The reduction in Professional Member category was 60% of the total, which is problematic for the long-term sustainability of the organization. In the past-year we have added a new route to membership we are calling the Highly Qualified Individual membership route. The Bylaws have been updated to reflect this change and the Membership Committee has been repopulated to begin evaluating these nominations. The current Membership committee consists of Shelby Filley (Chair), Beth Kegley, Peter Erickson, James Quigley, Ryon Walker, Greg Martin, and Matt Beck. Thank you for your service to ARPAS.

President’s Letter

Paul Beck, PhD, PAS, Dpl. ACAS

This last year has been a hardship on all of us, and ARPAS has also been affected. The online format to our professional meetings last year was great for maintaining involvement but did not supply the fellowship and interaction we thrive on to keep our programs centered.

The lack of in-person meetings has hampered our recruiting efforts, which usually occur at regional and national meetings of ASAS and ADSA among others. We are fortunate that Brittany Morstatter, Steve Schmidt, and our Examining Board had already been working on online testing, and we were able to administer ARPAS exams virtually.

Daryl Kleinschmit, PhD, PAS, Dipl. ACAS

First, I would like to wish all ARPAS members a happy and prosperous 2021. In addition, I hope all of us can get back to some level of normalcy over this new year, though admittedly, we may not know what that looks like yet.

One thing that 2020 has taught us as an organization is that we need to be adaptable to societal changes if we are going to meet the needs of our current members and recruit new ones. This challenge was successfully met head-on as denoted by the following two examples:

The three major initiatives this past year have been the journal, sponsorship, and membership demographics. In the February Newsletter, I covered the successful rejuvenation of the sponsorship program. We have successfully renegotiated a new contract with Elsevier for co-publishing with FASS our journal, Applied Animal Science.

I highly recommend that you read Kenneth Cummings’ commentary to see all the other issues that ARPAS has encountered in a very much busier than normal but fruitful year. Likewise, read David Beede’s commentary about the journal. We have been blessed with the superb service of Brittany Morstatter and her colleagues at FASS in the operation of ARPAS.

ARPAS Sponsorship

If you are going to only read one report in this newsletter, read Kenneth Cummings’ EVP report, as it is the most comprehensive, yet concise.

More specifically, I want to announce the new ARPAS Sponsorship program. In the past, there has been considerable corporate ARPAS sponsorship. But that has dwindled more recently due to a variety of circumstances. And it became a bit unwieldy with 3 levels of sponsorship. Thus, we decided to simplify and broaden the number of sponsorships.

ARPAS faces some critical and timely issues, and we are addressing them. These issues are the journal, sponsorship, and membership.

President’s Letter

N. Andy Cole, PhD, PAS, ACAN

Members of the Governing Council and the Executive Committee of ARPAS have been busy the past few months taking on a number of issues and challenges.

The item that has occupied most of our time is our publishing agreement with Elsevier. We are starting the fourth year of our agreement with Elsevier to publish Applied Animal Science.

President's Letter

N. Andy Cole, PhD, PAS, Diplomate ACAN

We are almost halfway through the ARPAS officer year.

We are sad to say that Cornicha Henderson, who has been the ARPAS representative at FASS for the past two years, has resigned and moved to another position. We thank Cornicha for her service and wish her the best in the future. Until Cornicha’s position is filled, Cara Tharp is giving us excellent help.

I am truly honored to serve as the president of ARPAS for the coming year and look forward to working with the other officers, directors, and committee members.  Thanks to John Bernard for his service as ARPAS president for the past year.

Congratulations to our newly elected officers (Al Kertz -- President-Elect; Mo Bakke – Secretary; Dana Tomlinson – Treasurer; Patrick French – ACAS President) and Directors (Dwight Roseler – Midwest; Tom Hickley – Northeast; Heidi Rossow – West; and Daniel Rivera – Southern).  I look forward to working with them and other members of the Governing Council over the next year.  Thanks to the outgoing officers and to those that were willing to run for office for their service to ARPAS.
