Message from the President

Bill Sanchez, PhD, PAS, Dipl. ACAN, President

We are approaching the mid-point of another year with ARPAS. As I pause to reflect on my role as your ARPAS President I am still thinking about Thanksgiving and all that we are grateful for. This is the time of year to be especially proud of the work we do to help put food on the Thanksgiving table. While most of us have plenty of food every day, there are still so many hungry people in the world. One example of how ARPAS has helped in this effort is the Memorandum of Understanding we signed with the Nigerian Institute of Animal Sciences to allow them to use the ARPAS model in their certification program. The Global Hunger Index (GHI) ranks Nigeria as one of the top 20 nations most ravaged by hunger, accounting for over 5 percent of the hunger problems in the world. We had the pleasure to meet several distinguished members of the Nigerian Institute this past summer at our National meeting and it was quite an honor to see how appreciative they are of the ARPAS organization.

CEU’S AND FEEDING THE ARPAS METER: An Environmentally Friendly, Twice Recycled Article

Kenneth Cummings, PhD, PAS, Dipl. ACAN, Exec. VP, ARPAS

Your ARPAS meter requires 16 CEU’s each year to stay in the black. If it is not fed, the numbers become red and you get a ticket. Every year in January, the ARPAS traffic cops send out a notice to the negligent few who have not fed the meter. This notice is in the form of a letter or email saying “earn and report your CEU’s or you will be suspended from ARPAS membership”. Earning CEU’s each year is an obligation you incurred when you became an ARPAS member. This is clearly explained in our bylaws (which you may review on our website at www.arpas.org).

Professional Relations Committee Report

Paul Beck, PhD, PAS, Southern Director

ARPAS has a long and successful history of building relationships with animal scientists in academia and industry. The Professional Relations Committees in the past have done tremendous work using these relationships to provide benefits to corporate sponsors and garner support for our organization. A not insignificant part of the support for ARPAS is from gifts from our corporate sponsors and we would like to thank those companies that have supported us in the past!

Greenhouse Gases and Regulations - The Subject of Two New Self-Study Modules

Almost everyone involved in the animal industry knows that environmental issues are one of the hottest topics around (no, that is not a climate change pun). The intensification of livestock and poultry farms has led to increased public and regulatory pressures and more examination of the environmental impacts of farms.

2012 Distinguished Professional Animal Scientist Award

Sara Beth Hinders sends her thanks for presenting her late husband, Dr. Raymond Hinders, the 2012 Distinguished Professional Animal Scientist award. In early November Sara Beth Hinders, shown below with Ray's close friend and colleague, John Kennedy, received this award on behalf of her husband. The 2012 ARPAS Symposium was also dedicated to Dr. Hinders. We received the following note from Sara Beth: "All of the Raymond family want to thank you for the ARPAS 2012 ARPAS Distinguished Professional Animal Scientist Award. Ray would feel so honored, because it came from you whom he held in such high esteem. He loved to go to the meetings and learn from all of you. You were truly his good friends."
