Message from the President

At this time I would like to announce the recipients of the 2012 Distinguished Professional Animal Scientists Awards. The honorees are Dr. Leonard S. Bull, Professor Emeritus of Animal Science and Poultry Science, North Carolina State University; Dr. Ray Hinders (deceased 2011), Private Dairy Consultant, California; and Dr. Vernon G. Pursel (deceased 2011), Research Reproductive Physiologist with the USDA-ARS, Beltsville, Maryland. Detailed biographies of these distinguished individuals are located elsewhere in this news letter.

ARPAS Foundation Update

ARPAS Foundation Committee: Bill Braman, Marit Arana, Randy Shaver, Dale Hill, Darrell Johnson, Moe Bakke, and Kenneth Cummings

The ARPAS Foundation’s assets now total $64,407. The ARPAS Foundation was established to recognize and fund worthy educational efforts of ARPAS and its members, or to promote the activities of ARPAS. The Committee is utilizing the Member Survey conducted two years ago to determine the educational activities to fund and support. The Foundation now has earnings to fund projects. One project under consideration is a series of ARPAS member interactive webinars where experts will review the implications of the implementation Food Safety and Modernization Act on our livestock and poultry industries. Ideas for projects from the membership are welcome.

Nominations for the 2012 ARPAS Distinguished Professional Animal Scientist Award

The ARPAS Distinguished Professional Animal Scientist award is bestowed annually on one or more emeritus members of ARPAS that have made significant contributions to the animal sciences during their active career and have served in a leadership position within ARPAS.

Recipients of this award will be recognized with an article in the newsletter and The Professional Animal Scientist journal, and with a tribute at our annual meeting. ARPAS Symposium 2012

The 2012 ARPAS Symposium has been set. The overall theme of the symposium is "Feed Efficiency: Opportunities for Improvement, Economics, and Integration with Environmental Sustainability." It will be held Tuesday morning the week of ASAS/ADSA meetings in Phoenix, AZ, from 9:30 am to 11:45 am.

Membership Update

Membership grows for 2012, up 10% from a year ago. To date, ARPAS has 1,446 paid individual members which includes 1,066 Professional, 181 Board Certified, 22 Associate, 32 Emeritus, 17 Lifetime Emeritus, and 21 Graduate Students. Fifteen Corporate Sponsors renewed their support of ARPAS so far this year.

American College of Animal Sciences (ACAS) Report

Since our last report, we have had two new members added to the ACAS roster: Dr. Aryana Kayanush, Louisiana State University, Animal Food Science discipline, and Dr. John McGlone, Texas Tech University, Animal Welfare Science discipline. This brings our current membership roster to 192 members. 

Our ACAS annual meeting will be held again this year in conjunction with the Joint ADSA/ASAS meetings in Phoenix, AZ. The meeting will take place from 12:30 pm to 2:00 pm on Monday, July 16th. At the current time, the exact meeting room has not been selected so be sure to check in the annual meetings program schedule for more details. I hope that everyone will have a chance to attend the meeting this year. As always, organizations such as ours work best when we have active participation of our membership. You help and participation will enable us to be a more effective group and organization. See you in Phoenix!

Featured Speaker: Richard S. Sellers, AFIA

Richard Sellers to speak at upcoming conferences

On behalf of ARPAS, Richard Sellers will be speaking about the Food Safety Act at the upcoming Tri-State Dairy Nutrition and 4-State Dairy conferences. (See conference information in the following article.) 

Richard Sellers is Vice-President of Feed Regulation and Nutrition. Sellers heads the Association's feed legislative and regulatory activities with Food & Drug Administration (FDA), Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO), and the state feed control agencies. He serves as staff coordinator for the Feed Regulatory Committee, Aquaculture Committee, and as technical advisor to the Nutrition Committee. Sellers earned a bachelor's degree in biology from the University of Memphis and a master's degree in animal science from the University of Arkansas. He is registered as Professional Animal Scientist with the American Registry of Professional Animal Scientists (ARPAS). He can be reached at (703) 558-3569.
