President’s Letter

Al Kertz, PhD, PAS, Dipl. ACAS Nutrition

The three major initiatives this past year have been the journal, sponsorship, and membership demographics. In the February Newsletter, I covered the successful rejuvenation of the sponsorship program. We have successfully renegotiated a new contract with Elsevier for co-publishing with FASS our journal, Applied Animal Science.

I highly recommend that you read Kenneth Cummings’ commentary to see all the other issues that ARPAS has encountered in a very much busier than normal but fruitful year. Likewise, read David Beede’s commentary about the journal. We have been blessed with the superb service of Brittany Morstatter and her colleagues at FASS in the operation of ARPAS.

Executive Vice President’s Report

Kenneth Cummings, PhD, PAS, Dipl. ACAS Nutrition

This report provides a brief accounting of my activities on behalf of ARPAS since our meeting with ASAS in Austin, Texas, in 2019. Without a doubt, the past few months have been filled with the most world-changing events of our lifetime. Being older than most of our members, that is quite a long time for me. ARPAS, as an organization, was affected as well and your leadership is diligently working to adapt to our new environment.

This report is divided into two parts. The first part will focus on some of the changes that have been made since early March to allow us to function as an organization given the constraints we now face.

Update from the Business Office

Brittany Morstatter, FASS Executive Assistant and Event Coordinator

ARPAS is now on social media—“Like” and “Follow” ARPAS on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Instagram. If you are interested in providing social media content relevant to ARPAS, please contact BrittanyM@assochq.org.

First, thank you to ARPAS members for showing such patience during the transition to the new membership database last August, and the subsequent changes to the renewal and CEU processes.

Starting in January, regularly scheduled “CEU balance” emails began to be distributed to members via email. Lists of upcoming meetings and approved webinar and on-demand content have been included in each of those emails. In light of the global pandemic, members should expect to see much more virtual content to be available for fulfilling CEUs.

ARPAS now offering online exams!

Stephen Schmidt, PhD, PAS, Dipl. ACAS Nutrition, Examining Committee Chair

The coronavirus shutdown presented ARPAS with a new challenge. If ARPAS was going to give exams, they would have to be administered online, most likely in the exam taker’s home, and without an ARPAS member present to ensure the security of the exam. How could we proctor an online exam?

After a couple of conference calls, a lot of reading, and learning different ways that universities were proctoring online exams, it was decided that ARPAS would purchase a Zoom Pro account, and Zoom would be used as an exam monitoring tool. Several universities were using Zoom in various ways to monitor exams. A side benefit of purchasing a Zoom account is that the Zoom annual fee is cheaper than the system ARPAS has been using for conference calls.

ARPAS Treasurer’s Report

Dana Tomlinson, PhD, PAS, Dipl. ACAS Nutrition

Through the first quarter of 2020, our National ARPAS organization continues to remain in a solid but general declining financial position. Year over year, through March, our Total Net Asset position is behind March 2020 by $130,020, due mainly to a fall in membership services, unrealized investment losses, and accrued FASS and Elsevier fees. Two shining beacons of hope are the growth in Annual Registry Sponsorships and growth in Applied Animal Science journal page charges.

ARPAS Foundation Report

N. Andy Cole, PhD, PAS, Dipl. ACAS Nutrition

The ARPAS Foundation is in excellent financial condition with a balance of $209,601.05 as of March 31, 2020. This is in large part to the generosity of the ARPAS Executive Vice President Kenneth Cummings who contributes a portion of his salary each year to the foundation.

In CY2019, the foundation made almost $6,000 in contributions to educational efforts of our members, including the following:

  1. $1,900 to pay the exam fees of graduate students,
  2. $2,835 to fund page charges for ARPAS symposium papers published in Applied Animal Science, and
  3. $250 to support the annual meeting of the Midwest Chapter.
