President’s Letter

Daryl Kleinschmit, PhD, PAS, Dipl. ACAS

First, I would like to wish all ARPAS members a happy and prosperous 2021. In addition, I hope all of us can get back to some level of normalcy over this new year, though admittedly, we may not know what that looks like yet.

One thing that 2020 has taught us as an organization is that we need to be adaptable to societal changes if we are going to meet the needs of our current members and recruit new ones. This challenge was successfully met head-on as denoted by the following two examples:

Executive Vice President’s Report

Kenneth Cummings, PhD, PAS, Dipl. ACAS

What a difference a year makes? I state this in the form of a question that we all need to answer regarding our personal and professional lives. One year ago, COVID-19 was not a factor in our individual worlds. Now, a year later, it dominates them. The same can be said for ARPAS.

ARPAS Treasurer’s Report

Dana Tomlinson, PhD, PAS, Dipl. ACAS

After the interesting happenings of 2020, our national ARPAS organization finished the year better than planned! Our membership remained quite strong, and we saw nice growth in our Applied Animal Science journal. Thanks to Kertz and our ARPAS associates, we were able to regain support from many corporate sponsors. The pandemic had hidden benefits with reduced travel expenses and meeting fees but hindered our ability to grow and maintain membership. Overall, we budgeted for a shortfall of just over $61,000, only to end with a deficit of $29,500.

ARPAS Foundation Report

N. Andy Cole, PhD, PAS, Dipl. ACAS

The ARPAS Foundation is in good financial status with a balance of $271,248.91 as of December 31, 2020. Outlays this past year were less than in previous years because of the COVID virus. The number of graduate student ARPAS exams paid for by the Foundation was significantly less than in 2019 ($475 vs. $1,900). Thanks again go to Executive VP Kenneth Cummings for contributing a significant portion of his stipend to the Foundation.
